Success in Spain!

22 June, 2017

Sir Thomas Wharton Academy PE Department is celebrating a very successful Sports Tour to Spain over the May half term.

44 students from Years 8 and 9 travelled overnight by coach through the UK, over the Channel into France and then Spain, where we arrived at the resort of Lloret de Mar. Following a sunny afternoon’s orientation and a restful night’s sleep the group were well prepared for sessions of football and netball.

With two days’ of sporting activities scheduled, the boys and girls were given a training session which was followed up with a tournament scheduled across the afternoons of Monday and Tuesday. Performance on the first day would determine the groupings on the second day.

The Year 8 and 9 boys’ footballers were trained in the morning by coaches from the West Ham United Academy. This was followed up by a series of 11-a-side games against other English schools from up and down the country.

Monday’s tournaments brought about mixed results for the two teams. The Year 8s were part of a 12-team tournament, split into three pools of four. Placings in these pools would result in schools qualifying for ‘Premiership’, ‘Championship’ and ‘League 1’ on the second day. After winning their first game 3-0, the boys followed up with a 0-0 draw before unfortunately losing to a last second winner in their final game of the day. Despite the defeat in the final game, the Y8s goal difference was enough to see them qualify for the ‘Premiership’ on the second day. The Year 9s were part of an 11-team tournament, divided into two groups. Although the boys competed really well during the first day, they narrowly missed out on qualifying for the top division during the second day.

Competitive games during the second day would see the Y8s finish in a three-way tie for second place in the Premiership. Considering the high standard of the three teams that the Y8s played against, this was an excellent finishing position. The Y9s were also more successful on the second day, finishing third in their group.

The netballers made fantastic progress through their coaching sessions and were more competitive with each game that they played. The highlight of the girls’ two day tournament experience was a 12-1 victory on the second day.

The Tuesday night was an opportunity to allow the students to let their hair down at a celebratory disco with all schools who competed in the netball and football competitions attending. It was a great experience and a real pleasure to see the students have so much fun.

Wednesday was an early start as the group ventured over to Barcelona for a tour of the Nou Camp. Once again the students represented the college extremely well and were in awe of the sheer magnitude of the stadium and the culture within the club museum. The afternoon provided an opportunity for a visit to Las Ramblas, where the students had some time to get lunch and do a spot of shopping.

The tour was rounded off by a visit on Thursday morning to the water park back in Lloret – a perfect way to round off an unforgettable week away.

The students on the tour were a real credit to the college. The PE Department look forward to planning the next visit away!
